LEGAL ISSUE

Allegations that Johnson & Johnson’s talc products caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma due to asbestos contamination.

RESOLUTION

Johnson & Johnson announced in 2023 that it would pay $8.9 billion to settle tens of thousands of talc lawsuits, spread over 25 years, resolving the majority of claims in the U.S.

Johnson & Johnson faced extensive litigation alleging that its talc-based baby powder products contained asbestos and contributed to ovarian cancer and mesothelioma in consumers. Thousands of plaintiffs filed mass tort claims, consolidating into multidistrict litigation (MDL). The litigation brought intense public scrutiny and raised questions about product safety and corporate responsibility.
